Can My Husband File For Spousal Benefits Only At Age 66 And Let His Own Rate Grow Until Age 70?

I am impressed with your prompt answers here..thank you.. Confusion on my part- I will be drawing SS at 65. Can my husband apply for restricted Spousal benefits at his FRA- and let his grow to 70? Irregardless of what our own benefits figure out to be?? Or are their stipulations to this? We both fall into the cut off date before 1954.

Hi,

Yes, if you are drawing your benefits and your husband was born before January 2 1954, he can file for spousal benefits only at age 66 and let his own benefit rate grow until age 70 (https://www.ssa.gov/planners/retire/deemedfaq.html). Before you apply, however, you may want to run the maximization software available on this website to make sure that you both choose the best filing strategy.

Best, Jerry
