Can I Receive Spousal Benefits On My Husband's Record If He Gets Disability Benefits?

I am 67 and still not receiving my social security. My husband is 60 and just got approved for disability. Will I be able to collect anything off his disability while waiting to collect mine at 70?

Hi,

Unless your husband's disability benefit rate is relatively low, you can likely receive spousal benefits on his disability record while letting your own benefit rate grow until age 70. There is a special family maximum formula that applies in disability cases, though, which sometimes precludes payment of auxiliary benefits on the accounts of people with very limited earnings histories (https://www.ssa.gov/OACT/COLA/dibfamilymax.html).

You'll probably want to check with Social Security to see if you are eligible to file a restricted application for spousal benefits only.

Best, Jerry
