Can I Get Survivor Benefits?

My husband pass 3 months ago I callto see if I could get benefits was told no cause he didn't have enough credits but he was on disability

Hi,

I'm sorry for your loss.

I can't really offer much help without more information. If your husband received Social Security disability benefits, then you may qualify for at least a $255 death benefit now, and potentially monthly benefits as a widow if you are at least age 60, or at least age 50 and disabled. Or, if you have children, both you and your children may qualify for survivor benefits right away.

However, if your husband was receiving only Supplemental Security Income (SSI) disability benefits, survivor benefits wouldn't be payable unless he was insured for Social Security benefits (https://www.ssa.gov/planners/survivors/onyourown.html).

Best, Jerry
