Ask Larry

Can I Change My Direct Deposit Date From The 2nd Wednesday To The 1st Of The Month?

Can is change my SSI auto deposit from the 2nd Wednesday of the month to the 1st of the month? I've been receiving SSI for 7 years.

Hi,

By SSI, you're apparently referring to Social Security benefits and not Supplemental Security Income (SSI). All SSI payments are issued on the 1st day of the month, whereas Social Security payments may be issued on either the 3rd day of the month, or the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th Wednesday of the month depending on the recipient's birthdate (https://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/handbook/handbook.01/handbook-0121.html).

Unless you receive both Social Security and SSI payments, it's very unlikely that you would meet any of the conditions that would allow you to change your Social Security payment date to the 3rd of the month.

Best, Jerry
